The only items a casual player needs is a max weapon and max armor. The armor costs only 7.5k, and a basic max-damage weapon costs anywhere from free (collector) to 5k (crafter).
You don't NEED anyone in your guildhall; go to a town. You don't NEED dyes.

t's basic economics. For example:
You have a bunch of cash. Someone is selling a Victo's Axe. You want it.
Someone is willing to buy it for 50K. You message the seller and offer him 200K. Why? Because you have a bunch of cash with nothing else to spend it on.
This trend continues, and now everyone that sells a Victo's Axe will demand 200K.
That's the problem - without gold sinks, there would be a ton of players with that excess cash and, as Tainek said above, that gold would become less and less valuable. That translates into the selling price asked by other players for their rare items to skyrocket, as they realize that players have the excess gold to spend.

The big deal about having too much money in circulation is inflation. If there are not enough gold sinks, everyone slowly accumulates cash, until they can charge and pay extremely high prices for goods and services. Then the new player is shut out even further than you think you are.
Traders actually keep prices down for dyes and runes, by providing a global, 24x7 market for those items. Before those traders existed you had to hope you were in the same district at the same time as a supplier, just like weapon mods are today.

Why the hell do you even want to pay 100k for a guild hall person???
Is owning guild hall services crucial to your guild wars experience and will vastly benefit how you play???

Its supply and demand..
if supply is high, demand is low and the price goes down
if supply is low and demand is high, the price goes up

I suspect for the same reason people buy FoW armor or 15k armor. For the status. A guild hall stocked full of NPC's is not something every guild can afford. Yet it can provide a sense of pride in their guild for the members of guilds that do.

No. Some things in the game, such as rare skins, FoW armor, perhaps 15k armor, etc. are meant to serve as status items that separate the casual players for the more hardcore, while not providing any competitive advantage. This is part of why people are upset with Ebayers. They get these things without putting in the effort.
Casual gamers can easily get the best armor and weapons (not necessarily the skins, but functionality) to be on an even playing field with someone with the rarest skins and FoW armor.

Um... Spend more time farming, playing, etc... whatever the more hardcore players do. That is the crowd that these NPC's are targeted at. You don't need them, though, so if you are a casual player, just accept it as something you won't get. This is how I used to look at 15k armor. Now, after having played a while, I have enough to outfit my chars with 15k. Why ? Because I want to.

A small bit of inflation is healthy for an economy, but without the gold sinks there is far too much of it. This is primarily due to the eBayers that flood the game with their ill-gotten gold. If you could eliminate them, the sinks wouldn't have to be as drastic...
I wish I could just take my mesmer and sit in the troll caves waiting in ambush... that would be so much fun...

Money sinks are only needed because some people don't enjoy playing the game, people that just want to play have no need for them.

The most usefull guild hall NPCs are quite a bit cheaper. Besides, why should you be the one to pay 100k? Get some guildmates to help pay for it.
Preist of Balthazar, and Storage are the most usefull, and neither are that expensive, especialy if you have help paying for them.

The fact is that the economy is and always will be screwed for some people. There are those who prefer everything to be ridiculously high priced because they're the hoarders and farmers who play the game like it's the stock market. They are the ones who complain whenever certain items are made more available or cheaper and scream that "the economy is now ruined"
Then there are those who dont give a crap about silly ingame wealth and just buys what he needs because everything is too expensive. Green items, which were supposed to be so that casual players could have decent weapons, can cost up to 80k at times. The current economy is screwed to them because items are so over inflated.
So I laugh when people scream about how the economy's ruined. It's only their perception that they're yelling about.

Having money is usefull.
For: buying candy canes.
buying Max armour(not necessarily 15k kind, droks will be enough)
buying this and that skill.
Buying this and that weapon.
Giving to your friends as tokens of gratitude.
Bribing people.
Paying for sex.
.........................
Ignore those last two. xD

roflmao sorry i felt an urge to say those last two for some reason.
But yeah, money isnt at all necessary, most money needed for fair decent armour and fair decent weapons can be acquired trough simple playing, no running no farming.
Basically you can buy just enough to survive trough normal gameplay, following the plot as it should be followed(this means no running).
Those extras are simply for more ambituos and patient, devoted players.
